Jean Paul Makhlouf

AP: This is your first time playing SXSW – how many times had you previously submitted?
JPM:
Only once.

AP: With so much competition, why do you think your band was selected?
JPM:
Good people at good places that see all the hard work we're putting into our band.

AP: Overall, do you think connections & politics is a big factor in the selection process?
JPM:
They play a big part of it. I think people want to help and support bands that are working hard for themselves but there's definitely more to it. People want to help bands they personally like and have good relationships with. People also want to help other people's bands that might benefit themselves down the road. It's always been like that. You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours...

AP: How much have you budgeted to play/stay at the festival?
JPM:
$1,000 in hotels, around $700 in gas, and close to $175,000 in partying...

AP: How did you justify the costs?
JPM:
Roadtrip!

AP: How are you funding the trip? Did you get any sponsors?
JPM:
Tour support from our label helps a bit, but we're mostly funding it ourselves.

AP: How will playing SXSW impact your career?
JPM:
We don't really have any specific expectations, we're just going to have a good time and get our music out there.

AP: What are you doing to make sure that your show makes the most impact?
JPM:
Play as loud as we possibly can and then take the party to everyone's bedrooms....

AP: Do you think it’s ironic that with all the unsanctioned free events that SXSW is facing some of the same pressures as the music industry as a whole: Free-product competing so dramatically with paid-product in quantity and quality?
JPM:
I just write the songs man......(said in a super hippy voice)
