The Music Industry Goes On Spring Break

And so do we! Visit MRG in Booth #301 for a shot of Atlas Tonic, discounts on the Musician's Atlas print edition and free trials of the AtlasOnline.

Mardi Gras. Holi. St. Patrick’s Day. Spring Break. SXSW. Like other springtime bacchanalias, the music industry has it’s own annual celebration filled with expectation & excess – SXSW.

Defying budget constraints and a global state of despair & uncertainty, Austin’s annual
March madness (March 13-22) continues to draw top industry execs, established artists,
buzz bands & music moguls of every stripe to discover new talent & ideas, get trashed and
network, network, network.

While many gripe that the event has become too large, too corporate and too expensive – SXSW remains the nexus of exciting live music and the next big thing.

Sure it’s fun – truly a spring break for an industry that needs a break – but SXSW remains relevant because it is the canary in the goldmine.

It reflects where the industry is at the moment & where it’s headed because it attracts entrepreneurs & early adopters. It’s all about unfettered independent content finding alternative opportunities – which at the moment is more about licensing & technology than label deals and album sales; free content vs paid.

So while registration for the music portion of the festival is reportedly down by 10-15%, the Interactive & Film event is up by 30%; while labels & corporate sponsors are cutting back, countless unsanctioned free parties & showcases will cram every available alley, parking lot & hotel room.

For this issue we polled artists & presenters (Adam Lewis of The Planetary Group,
Madalyn Sklar of GoGirls, Barry Coffing of musicsupervisors.com and veteran DIY showman & music industry gadfly Martin Atkins, to name a few) about how they’re making $$$s & sense out of this years’ SXSW. Read More Here.

Hanson

Now older & wiser, former label darlings & teen sensations, Hanson are independent of management & major label support. One the most anticipated moments of SXSW this year will be the debut of Tinted Windows. It’s the surprising collaboration between former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha, Cheap Trick drummer Bun E. Carlos and Fountains of Wayne bassist Adam Schlesinger, fronted by pop idol Taylor Hanson. Our own Joelle Batelli chats with the boys about their new direction & the old industry model.
