How I Spent My Summer Tour

Reel Big Fish

Their 1997 hit, “Sell Out” thrust the California Ska/Punk band
Reel Big Fish, into the mainstream spotlight and landed them a major label contract with Jive/Mojo Records. Sixteen years after forming, there’s only one original member left standing -- vocalist/guitarist Aaron Barrett. Battled-scarred and wiser, Barrett is a survivor who’s enjoying success on his terms on indie label, Rock Ridge Music and at this summer’s Vans Warped Tour with bandmates Dan Regan (trombone/ vocals),
Scott Klopfenstein (trumpet/ vocals), John Christianson (trumpet/ vocals), Ryland Steen (drums) and Derek Gibbs (bass/vocals). Barrett took some time out to give Atlas Plugged the lowdown on the ‘08 festival circuit and his assessment of the current live music scene.

Paper Rival

Life on the road always offers the potential for adventure and mishap. Last week, the Photo Finish Records act Paper Rival (formerly known as Keating) found themselves unwitting participants in a petty crime that left them stranded mid-tour without transportation and will perhaps influence their future budget planning.

Things began smoothly enough in July when the Nashville-based Indie Rockers, (Brent Coleman - guitar/keyboards, Cody McCall – bass, Patrick Damphier - guitar/drums, Jacob Rolleston - vocals/guitar) hitched their van to a trailer to begin their a month long tour with The Honorary Title, The New Frontiers and Mansions. In New Orleans a high-speed chase in a stolen car crippled Paper Rivals’ parked van – forcing the cancellation of some shows and the need for alternate transportation. We spoke to Patrick Damphier about the high cost of touring days before this unexpected tour detour…

Man on Earth

As independent entrepreneurs, the NYC-based Pop Rockers,
Man On Earth, seek creative ways to overcome the burdens and maximize the opportunities. This summer the band will cover 3000 miles (perhaps in a school bus converted to run on veggie oil) and record their next record with veteran Producer Ken Lewis – who’s talents have helped The Beastie Boys, Lenny Kravitz, Soul Asylum, Kanye West, Jay-Z and Usher achieve multi-platinum success. And, if that’s not enough, Stephen Pearcy of the Mega Platinum 80's metal band RATT is singing back up. How do they do it?

Christian Cuff

Christian Cuff was a driving force behind last year’s successful “IndieNational Tour” – an informal international collective that uses local artists to book shows for other musicians - the goal is to create exciting live-shows that bring musicians from different cultures & backgrounds to perform together. This summer Christian (vocals & guitar) and his band mates cellist Janet Lee, bassist, Joey Pierog, and didgeridooist, Joseph Carringer will be hitting the road for gigs that will span three continents to support live music and his new release, Silo…

Akudama

Granola & Yoga may not be the excesses that you'd expect from a Rock n/ Roll band on tour. Yet the health conscious Brooklyn-based quartet, brothers Calvin and Cayce Pia, Blake Charleton, and
Eli Silverman that make up Akudama swear by these essentials to keep things moving in the right direction while enduring life on the road. This summer the band packed their PrimeTime Dodge Ram B250 conversion van with trail mix, fruit, burritos, and a couple hundred Magnum condoms to take their eclectic 50¹s style Rock tunes to fans from Kentucky to New England.

As an indie band with few resources, New Jersey based Pop/Rockers, HONOR SOCIETY, Michael Bruno (lead vocals / guitar), Jason Rosen (keyboards / backup vocals), Andrew Lee (bass / backup vocals) and Alexander Noyes (drums) need to be resourceful.

Eggroll

Originally formed in 2001 as a cover band while still in high school, the Israeli Psychedelic Prog. Rockers, Eggroll have enjoyed significant success including opening for Jethro Tull and playing for crowds of 25,000. The band spent 40 days spreading their exotic Eastern sound during their first American tour. Eggroll’s philosophy - “with hard work you can survive, with harder work you can thrive - anything is possible!” seems to work. Of course, Skype, pre-sales and free beer were also key ingredients to the tours success…
